St. Patrick’s day is a truly global affair. In Chicago they dye the river green, parades fill the streets of Dublin, London, New York, Moscow and too many other cities to list.
Even the river Vilnele in Lithuania was dyed green in celebration last year. While world landmarks such as the London Eye, the pyramids at Giza and the Sydney Opera House are basked in green light to celebrate the event.
Unsurprisingly for a holiday that has such global appeal, advertisers are also keen to push their products. This often results in frenzied campaigns akin to those seen during other holiday periods.
So with the day drawing close, we thought it would be apt to share four of our favourite St. Paddy’s Day adverts.

Jameson is an iconic Irish drink and their Be Original advert perfectly channels the global appeal of the St. Paddy’s Day.
Challenging viewers to celebrate the day in their ‘own original way’, Jameson’s inclusive message throughout the advert is impressive. Nowhere is it more pronounced than at the end of the advert when the poignant voice over powerfully announces:
“You don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day … It’s all in your approach.”
If that doesn’t get you ready for the day we don’t know what will.
When you think of Ireland and St. Patrick’s Day what’s the first drink that springs to mind?
I’d be surprised if the answer wasn’t Guinness and just as the brand’s beer is rather good their advertising isn’t half bad either.
We particularly like this advert called Round Up Your Friends, it’s a nice reminder of the inclusivity of St. Patrick’s Day whilst also highlighting that Guinness is more appealing than any other vice you could name!
So this one’s not a TV advert and it’s not by an iconic Irish brand but at The Living Room we like to celebrate creativity in all its forms and McDonald’s 2011 Shamrock Shake was a clever piece of advertising.
With a massive McDonald’s cup overturned and appearing to pour green liquid into the dyed green Chicago River, it appeared as though McDonald’s had turned the river green.
A nice touch.
One more from Guinness, because nobody advertises during St. Patrick’s better.
Many adults probably find Saint Patrick’s Day more appealing than Christmas, for obvious reasons. Guinness channelled this in their 2004 advert St. Patrick’s Day Morning where three young men are seen racing downstairs.
There they are greeted by wrapped green presents, full with all the Guinness you could imagine.
